A ripple in development? : long term perspectives on the response to the Indian Ocean tsunami 2004 : a joint follow-up evaluation of the links between relief, rehabilitation and development (LRRD) / Emery Brusset ... [et al.]. - Stockholm : Sida. - 2009 (164 p.) This report is a follow-up evaluation of linkages between immediate relief, rehabilitation (or reconstruction) and development (LRRD) related to the response to the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. The first LRRD evaluation was carried as part of the Tsunami Evaluation Coalition (TEC) set of evaluations in 2005-06. The LRRD2 evaluation report covers experiences up to the end of 2008 in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, i.e. from the four years after the disaster. A number of organisations and government agencies have supported this evaluation in various ways, with the aim to provide conclusions and lessons learned that are useful for mitigating the consequences of possible future disasters.

As a service to readers BIES has decided regularly to publish abstracts of recently completed doctoral theses on the Indonesian economy. The intention is to bring significant new research in this field, and the authors of such work, to the notice of readers soon after theses have been examined and accepted. New PhDs are strongly encouraged to submit thesis abstracts of about 500 words for publication in this series. Abstracts must be in English, although the thesis itself may be written in any language. The subject must be economics in Indonesia, widely interpreted to include fields such as economic history and economic geography; comparative country studies that focus particularly on Indonesia are also acceptable. Theses must have been accepted to be eligible. Submissions should include the name and contact details of the student's supervisor (not for publication) to allow confirmation of eligibility. They should indicate the year of acceptance of the thesis, the name of the conferring institution and the author's e-mail address, and should be sent to editor.bies@anu.edu.au. Readers, especially former advisers of doctoral candidates, are kindly requested to bring this series to the attention of new PhDs, or to advise the editor if they are aware of recently completed theses that may be suitable for inclusion. Thesis abstracts have been published in the December issue of BIES each year since 2003. View the PhD thesis abstracts published in: Volume 43 No. 3, 2007 Volume 42 No. 3, 2006 Volume 41 No. 3, 2005 Volume 40 No. 3, 2004 Volume 39 No. 3, 2003

Access Indonesia is a three-year project (2002-2005) funded under Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (TICFIA) Program of US Department of Education. The main purpose of the project is to foster a fuller interdisciplinary understanding of Indonesia by using recent advances in Internet technology (e.g. Web-GIS, Multimedia). The project is undertaken by the University of Southern California (USC) [School of Policy, Planning and Development (SPPD)] and the Institute of Technology Bandung, Indonesia (ITB) [ Center for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS)]. Indonesia is the fourth populous nation in the world. It is one of the strong trading partners in Southeast Asia with a dynamic economy, and it has a pivotal role in the regional security and stability of the overall region. Further, since the country is transitioning toward becoming the world's third largest democracy, Indonesia is strategically important for the United States whose mission is to promote democratic institutions in the region. Most important of all, Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world and provides a fertile ground to understand the Muslim culture and society, which has become imperative following the September 11, 2001 tragedies. Yet, Indonesia is among the least known countries in the United States and sources of in-depth, scholarly information on the country are limited.

This fact sheet provides an overview of the CSIRO project Analysing Pathways to Sustainability in Indonesia outlining Indonesia's pioneering new approach to national decision making that helps explain the impact high-level decisions have on ordinary people and on natural resources. For the first time, a powerful new tool is allowing policy makers to better understand the consequences of macro policy at the micro level. It will allow policy makers to see: - How a major policy decision influences the decisions of families - How their decisions affect natural resource use - How this in turn plays back into national economic performance This paper looks at the Pathways approach, which interprets the impact of macro decisions on different income groups in the community, and how their behaviour affects natural resources such as water, soil, energy, fish stocks, timber and minerals.
