Dissertations Dissertations A study of the Korean Wave in order to be a lesson to Thailand for establishing a Thai Wave en A study of the Korean Wave in order to be a lesson to Thailand for establishing a Thai Wave / Pavinee Potipan, Nantaphorn Worrawutteerakul. - Mälardalen University. School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology. - 76 p. (Master's thesis) After having faced the economic collapse in 1998, South Korea government initiated “Hallyu” as a soft power to improve the economic status, export its cultural products and even build the country an image. Hallyu or the Korean wave represented the popularity of Korean popular culture which had spread across Asia. Asian people widely consumed Korean cultural goods by watching Korean dramas, listening to Korean pop music or even doing plastic surgery to look like Korean actors as well as imitating their fashion style. The success of the Korean wave also expanded to other Korean industries such as tourism, food, electronics and so on. Purpose The purpose of the research is to figure out the possibility for Thailand to adopt the strategy of the Korean wave in the interest of creating a Thai wave. The authors will investigate the factors behind the Korean wave success and compare it to Thailand‟s potential that might affect to the creation of a Thai wave. Method The research was conducted with a qualitative approach. Data collection applied both primary and secondary data. Focus groups from three Asian nationalities were used as primary data. The secondary data as a main resource collected from many websites, books, and online articles. (Master's thesis) A longitudinal analysis (1920-2006) of “adoption” as an issue represented in the public discourse in Korea, is presented in this master thesis. Newspaper articles referring to adoption were identified in searchable electronic databases. As Korea is a major source of transnational adoption and also has the highest ratio of adoptions per 100.000 births, one would expect adoption to constitute a prominent social issue in the public discourse. Across the seven decades (1920-2006) available to analysis, the frequency of newspaper articles referring to adoption varied strongly: With exception to a few occasions during the twenties, adoption was virtually absent as an issue in the public discourse until after WWII, and in particular after the Korean War. After the huge interest created by the Korean War faded, the interest for adoption stayed at a rather low level until the late eighties/early nineties when the interest increased rapidly until present (2006) and by far surpassed even the frequency of articles referring to adoption immediately after the Korean War. Qualitative analysis of newspaper articles containing the word adoption showed that adoption was conceived of within ideologically frameworks changing over time. Institutions involved in the network are classified as ARTNeT Members, Core Partners, and Associate Partners. Please consult the ARTNeT membership guidelines or the list of members and partners for more information. iven the increasing complexity of the international trade environment, policy makers in the UNESCAP region are in need of more effective institutions able to deliver the research and analytical studies to make better decisions. In April 2004, developing countries in Asia and the Pacific expressed support for the establishment of a research network on trade to equip the region with a mechanism for enhancing the capacity of research institutions. This led to the creation of the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade (ARTNeT), an open regional network composed of leading trade research institutions across the UNESCAP region, and supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. The UNESCAP Trade and Investment Division is the Secretariat of the Network and coordinate its activities, while an Institutional Advisory Board (IAB) has been set up to provide leadership and guidance during its initial phase. Three Permanent Advisors for Research, Professors Jagdish Bhagwati, Alan Deardorff and John Whalley, also provide strategic guidance on the ARTNeT research programme and its implementation. A first step for a donor like Norway is to ask what can be learned from the Asian donors on new or alternative forms of donorship. What can we learn from Japan's extensive aid experience, but also from China and India which started south-south cooperation and aid programmes back in the early 1950s? Do they represent alternative thinking on what brings economic development and poverty reduction? Will this challenge some of the basic ideas underpinning the current emphasis of national poverty reduction strategies supported by the donor community? Such questions formed the background for a seminar arranged in Oslo, 5 December 2006, inviting experts on Japan, China, India and South Korea to address the question: Is there a non-Western approach to development assistance? The following is a summary of the main massages and arguments presented, and the discussion on what Norway as a donor can do.
